A few serious words from the past

Recently, I’ve been cleaning and I have come across something I have forgotten about a long time ago. It was a white A4 page covered on both sides with words. And these words formed an article which has contained my reflections on life. I have written it years ago – I must have been around 16 or 17 years old. Also, for this reason I was really surprised when I read it. It seems that my views and observations that I have found so true in life and have forgotten for many years, have already appeared back then. And it sounds refreshing written in the words of a teen! That’s why I want to share it with you. Hopefully, someone apart from me will find it equally interesting (and at times also funny 😉 ).

A few words more seriously

(…)

Let’s start from the beginning. We are born. Just like a rising sun or a seed that has grown enough to finally emerge out of the ground, we leave the wombs of our mothers. We start to maturate very fast. The life awaited us and here it comes…DSC00456

‘Life is so short’, we catch ourselves thinking. Well, I’d agree that it really is. However, I’d say that most of us don’t even live for 70%. We waste our valuable time on hanging around, doing simply nothing or even worse – looking for a perfect life. Yet, does such a thing really exist? We want it to. That’s for sure. Some people actually want it too much. They try to persuade themselves and others that for example Michael Jackson is still alive and somehow lives underground with Elvis (!) (oh, yes it is an existing opinion). Why do we fool ourselves? Will it change anything? Why do we try to build a perfect life, a perfect reality? Actually, in my opinion, live of us all are completely imperfect. Even if we think that celebrities really do have no worries, after a while we might accidentally come across an article saying that for instance Eminem suffers from depression. We will read it, believe it or maybe just laugh at it. Anyway, I bet that we will forget it and soon return to the previous assumption.

Let’s say that we do really want to do something with our lives. We even plan it, very ambitiously. However, in most of us, the natural tendency towards laziness will sooner or later win. That’s okay if we aren’t planning to achieve anything. The truth is, sitting listlessly on the couch and eating popcorn/chips/cookies all the time might even make us lose in our life battle.

The other thing is ‘What will people say?’ type of thinking. I’m truly devoted to the rule of taking things easy, not caring what others say if I’m convinced that what I’m doing is right with me. I reckon that’s what makes us special: being different from each other. Nowadays, our society is actually trying to kill our individuality. China and Russia are the true leaders of such aspirations but unfortunately we can’t fool ourselves that we are much better than they are.

As Pascal said ‘Man is a reed, the weakest of nature, but he is a thinking reed.’ What distinguishes us from the world of plants and animals is that we think. So I say let’s do it! Let’s lay our hands on our lives and try to make the best of them. I can assure you that you won’t regret it.

  1. Hi Magdalena. Thanks for following RenoirWords – I hope we can inspire each other along the way. I’ve been reading your thoughts on happiness. I’ve learned (over a few extra decades) that it’s neither realistic nor actually desirable to be “Happy” for every waking moments. Some things will upset you, or anger you, or disappoint you. But those things are necessary too, because without them you can’t fully appreciate the great things. Accept the negatives without focussing on them, enjoy the positives without being a slave to them, and love the balance that is life. Peace.

    • Hi Renoir! Thank you for visiting my blog! I agree – everything in life is about balance. It’s also important to embrace all feelings, including the feelings of sadness. Still, I think it’s good to have a positive outlook on things. This way you can make the best of whatever happens to you instead of letting it get you down 🙂

  2. Hi Magdalena,

I completely agree on this whole concept. The whole idea of ‘what will people think’ has killed more ambitions and dreams and blocked many doors before anyone could even knock them.

Thank you for passing by my blog! I hope we interact often.

    Much love and best wishes,
    The Rambler

  3. Hi, loved the letter, you were pretty mature for your age when you wrote it 🙂 You were absolutely right in all points, we try to focus so much in living a “pefect” life in the eyes of others that we forget our truly selves…
    Thanks for following my blog!

    • Thank you! I even surprised myself 😛
Exactly! That’s why it’s important to constantly motivate ourselves and remind ourselves that we are not here to please everyone around but rather to express our true selves and become our best versions.

  4. Can I simply say what a comfort to uncover somebody who actually knows what they are discussing on the net. You definitely know how to bring a problem to light and make it important. A lot more people must look at this and understand this side of your story. I was surprised you are not more popular because you most certainly have the gift.|

    • Thank you for the kind words, Arthur! Much appreciated 🙂 It’s always nice to know that there are people out there reading these words and find value in them.
