Life as a chain of rejections

Today it stroke me that in any given area in life we are bound to receive more rejections than “yes’es”. Whether you’re applying for an admission to a school, for a job, to a literary agent to consider your manuscript or even trying to get a date, an average person will get dozens or even hundreds of “no’s” before that one human on the other end comes along and accepts their offer. True independence – does it exist?

independentRecently, I have been thinking about independence. Oftentimes we call ourselves independent when we start making decisions for ourselves or earning our living. When it comes to financial independence, it makes sense – when we grow up and start working, we become financially independent from our parents. However, what about the choices and decisions that we make? Are they truly independent? Continue reading

The key to good relationships with people

We all have many different kinds of relationships in our lives. Whether it’s a relationship with our family members, friends, lovers or business partners, many people sooner or later seem to face crisis, misunderstandings or even fights. I believe that more often than not these problems can be avoided by working on the way we communicate with other people. Continue reading

Big girls don’t cry… Do they?

Do you ever feel completely powerless, unable to move? Do you ever feel confused with life, not knowing what to do with it? Do you ever find yourself crying because of the enormous pain growing inside you for no apparent reason? And it all makes you feel even worse about yourself because in the end you have nothing to complain about. After all, there are people in this world who are starving, have no roof above their head or are fighting with cancer. And you find yourself so horribly ungrateful, even spoiled for crying over your life. Well, I must tell you, you are not alone. I have also suffered from the feelings of pointlessness, feeling powerless and confused, asking myself ‘When does it all end? Where am I headed? What am I to do with myself?’. Continue reading

What to do when your life sucks

Today, while having my gym session, I was thinking how way too often I hear people around me saying things like ‘I’m so fat’, ‘My life sucks’, ‘I never have money for anything’, ‘People don’t like me’, ‘Old ladies and teenagers have a better sex life than me’, ‘I can’t change’, ‘It’s too difficult’, ‘I hate my job’ and so on and so on. For me, all of these statements fall into one huge category called ‘complaining’. Seriously people, I don’t mean to offend anyone but it seems that somehow we have become a generation which expects a lot and yet is not particularly willing to put much effort in it. We want things to happen to us just like that, for free. The thing is, it doesn’t work this way. If you want to change something, then stop complaining and do something about it. Continue reading

What would the wise owl do?

wiseowlDuring my spring break I went back to Poland to celebrate Easter with my family. I was also hosting some friends from Switzerland (where I’m living at the moment) and wanted to show them some places in my country of origin. Naturally, I took them to a beautiful little town – Kazimierz Dolny, which is really close to my home town. As we were walking along the river and enjoying the stunning views, I noticed a really interesting graffiti on the wall beside. Surrounded by all the ugly and nonsense scribbles, there were two identical owls with the following words underneath: Continue reading

Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened – Dr. Seuss

When I look out the window on the gloomy autumn days, I often catch myself getting melancholic and sad. There’s just something depressing about the rain and the lack of sunshine. However, luckily there are some ways that can instantly cheer up even the most prone to getting depressed souls.

“Fear makes strangers of people who would be friends” – Shirley Maclaine

There are many things we fear in life. Every single day, we face fear of doing something because we’re afraid of what people would think about us or of approaching a person we like, because of the potential rejection. Many of us even fear that an accident might happen every time we or our family/friends get into a plane or a car. It’s so hard for us to presume that nothing bad will happen even though most of the time things that we fear never happen at all. How much time and energy could be saved if we stopped fearing and presumed that everything will simply turn out great? Continue reading
